Sophie Anderson*   ~ The Head of a Nymph ~

A Wood-Nymph had I Seen

In my own voice

Music: Suki by Anna Schaad

I only saw a woman, ‘til her voice the soft wind brought

I bent my head to hear those tones, both joyful and serene.

Spellbound—by its music, I found that I was caught:

A wood-nymph had I seen,
Shaped of slender tree, and quickened with a dream.

By fortune yet unknown, with this fair creature I broke bread,

As her voice and mien gave blessings to the woodland queen.

Enthralled, my heart with hers seemed spun into a single thread.

A wood-nymph had I seen,
Once human-child, now shimmering like a dream.

My armour’s glint has dulled, as many years have passed,

But in her eyes reflected once its old familiar sheen:

The light of quests of faith and love, each greater than the last.

A wood-nymph had I seen,
Luring me to cross the threshold of a dream.

Tho’ I have searched, and sought her long, to her sylvan world she is gone,

And now my sword rings hollow across the warriors’ green,

Missing, is that laughing voice, filled with joyful song.

A wood-nymph had I seen,
Lost in waiting-silence, yet still walking in my dream.
